Marula (2020) by Kevin Volans
During lockdown in 2020 I began a series of virtuoso solo pieces for friends of mine whose concert careers were drastically curtailed, and who were then forced to work alone from home. The first of these, Baobab for saxophone, was written for the Dutch virtuoso Raaf Hekkema. I later made versions for violin and then viola.
The second piece was Marula for marimba which I wrote for Jonny Axelsson. (Later I made a version for flute with Manuel Zurria in mind).
Like the baobab, the marula is a tree indigenous to Africa. Both are of importance to local communities – the marula not least because it provides a popular nourishing fruit sought after by both humans and animals.
