about

Lautensuite Nr. 4 in E-Dur BWV 1006 (approx. 1715) by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arrangement by Jonny Axelsson for marimba

At the beginning of my music studies I played a lot of classical guitar. Some pieces for guitar I also played on vibraphone or marimba. Primarily as exercises and to develop my prima vista playing. In my activities as a musician back then, I also happened to perform music by Johann Sebastian Bach together with various instrumentalists such as organ, flute, violin and vocals. I wanted to be able to play some more extensive work by Bach for solo marimba and soon I decided on the Lute Suites. I transcribed Lute Suite No. 4 and for a few years at the beginning of my career I played it a lot, many times in churches. But that was more than thirty years ago…
When the Covid 19 pandemic canceled concert activities and I realised that this break could be long, I went back to the Lute Suite No. 4. At first just to keep my playing going with good music, the main purpose was to practice and keep up my technique. Eventually I realised that I actually did not have any recording from earlier times and that it might be interesting to record Lute Suite No. 4, movement by movement.
Many works by Bach can be performed on different instruments, but the way the works are played is greatly influenced by the instrument on which they are performed. I have listened to violinists playing the Partita No. 3, and listened to versions performed on the lute. My interpretation is also influenced by all the contemporary repertoire I have played over the years; Steve Reich, Iannis Xenakis and Karlheinz Stockhausen are some of the composers that popped up into my head while working on Lute Suite No. 4. The Suite was composed sometime around 1715 and one may wonder how the piece was performed at that time. Any interpretation in my opinion is also influenced by the acquired musical experience of the musician. This means that the music is possibly performed in a new way, and that it gets a new life.
